The short version
- 1An item finished a few minutes earlier is often worth more than a more expensive one.
- 2Every trip to the shop, ask: what problem in this game does this item answer?
- 3Leaving the build is fine — as long as you can name the reason.
01Why Item Timing Matters
Your hero peaks when a key item is done. The enemy knows that too, so a late item means your strong moment arrives when they're ready for it.
How to get items sooner:
- Die less — every death throws away gold and farming time.
- Farm between fights: take the nearest wave or camp after every fight.
- Don't delay your core item for small items that feel nice.
- Don't sit on half-built components for too long — finish one item first.
Coach's tips
- Note the minute your core item finishes each game and compare.
- After a fight, go straight to farm — don't walk to base without a reason.
- Arcana can show whether your games tend to stall at a certain minute.
02Reading the Enemy to Choose Items
Choose items from the problem you're actually having, not from memory:
- Why am I dying? Chain stuns → Black King Bar or Linken's Sphere. Beaten by physical carries → Ghost Scepter, Blade Mail or armor. Caught with no escape → Force Staff.
- Why is my team losing fights? Lots of area magic → Pipe of Insight or Glimmer Cape. Enemies we can't see → Sentry, Dust or Gem.
- Why am I useless in fights? Can't get in → a Blink Dagger or another mobility item.
Coach's tips
- One well-timed counter item beats a big item that arrives late.
- Check the enemy's inventory (click their hero) before deciding.
- A late BKB is almost the same as no BKB.
03When to Leave the Build
Builds on the Builds page are a starting point. Leave them when:
- The enemy has one hero that always kills you — buy the answer to that hero first.
- You're far behind — defensive items (BKB, Force Staff) before farming items.
- You're far ahead — items that end the game sooner, not ones that pay off in 20 minutes.
One rule: don't deviate unless you can name the reason.
Coach's tips
- Say why you're buying something in chat — it helps the team follow your plan.
- Farming items while far behind often means dying before they're done.
- Sell small items when your slots are full and you need a situational one.

Black King Bar. While spell immunity is up, most of their stuns and nukes can't touch you — so you get to hit.
Your team is 10k gold ahead at minute 25. Your build suggests another farming item next.Show the answer
Buy what helps end the game now — damage, BKB or a pushing item — and turn the lead into objectives. Another farming item gives the enemy time to catch up.
Try it next game
Every time you shop, name the problem the item answers. If you can't, hold off on buying it.
