Dota 2 in one sentence
Two teams of 5 players fight on one map. The first team to destroy the Ancient, the main building in the enemy base, wins.
Each player controls one hero, a character with signature abilities. There are more than 120 heroes, and each one plays differently.

Pudge
Hooks enemies in from far away.

Juggernaut
Spins like a top, immune to magic.

Crystal Maiden
Freezes enemies in place.
One game from start to finish
Every game roughly has three acts. No need to memorise them yet — just know the flow:
Early game
Each hero holds their own lane and collects gold to buy items.
Mid game
Teams group up, fight together and take enemy buildings.
Late game
Heroes are strong now. One big fight can decide the winner.
How long is a game?
Usually 30–45 minutes. A one-sided game can end in 20, and a close one can run past an hour.
It isn't over until the Ancient falls. Teams that fall behind still come back often if they play carefully.
Why people get hooked
Dota 2 is free to play on Steam. Every hero is unlocked from day one, so only skill wins games — not your wallet.
No two games alike
The mix of 10 heroes, items and strategy is different every time.
Always something new
Valve regularly ships updates (patches) that change heroes and items.
A huge esports stage
Its biggest tournament, The International, is watched worldwide.
