You don't need every hero
There are a lot of heroes, but the trick is simple: pick just 2–3 and play them until they click.
Being good at 3 beats being average at 30. Even pros lean on a small set of heroes.
The four hero attributes
Every hero has one main attribute. It's a quick hint at how that hero plays.

Strength
Lots of health, hard to kill.

Agility
Fast attacks and thick armor.

Intelligence
Big mana pool, lives on spells.

Universal
A bit of everything.

Five positions on a team
A team has 5 positions. The lower the number, the bigger that player's share of gold. Position 1 takes the most, position 5 the least, because they spend it helping the team.
Pos 1 — Carry
Farms the most and becomes the strongest hero late. Example: Juggernaut.
Pos 2 — Midlaner
Plays mid alone, gets strong fast, roams to help other lanes. Example: Shadow Fiend.
Pos 3 — Offlaner
Tough and often starts the fights. Example: Axe.
Pos 4 — Soft support
Roams to ambush enemies and helps whichever lane needs it. Example: Lion.
Pos 5 — Hard support
Protects the carry, places wards, stays poor for the team. Example: Crystal Maiden.
